We invite you to submit an abstract and apply for participation in the workshop:
In this workshop, we want to investigate similarities and differences in figurative language (metaphors etc.), especially in conceptual metaphors (after Lakoff & Johnson 1999) of German, Indonesian and other languages of Nusantara, and find etymological explanations of their motivatedness. In other words: “Which transfers of meaning are there and why are certain motifs and topics chosen or preferred for them?”
One example would be the parallel use of words for the head to refer to things like dt. Briefkopf, Hauptstadt; cf. en. Letter head, capital (city), or id. kepala desa (village chief). Another example, illustrating a notable contrast, would be the contrast between dt. Herz (heart) and id. hati (liver) for the seat of emotions, as is manifest in many idiomatic expressions. Such differences in nomination can regularly lead to interference and misinterpretations, which thus are often addressed in foreign language teaching as well as in translation studies. They also shed light onto the cultural idiosyncrasies underlying such linguistic differences. [For more information about motifs and motivation click here.]
In the workshop, we want explore and compare examples from different text types or genres, styles or registers, perhaps also different epochs or regional varieties, if possible, with the inclusion of cultural and historic factors alongside linguistic findings.
